The Kellogg Biological Station provides a spectrum of challenging and rewarding learning opportunities for undergraduate students. Our summer courses are taught by faculty who travel the world to explore today's important ecological challenges from a global and multidisciplinary perspective. We offer field-based study promoting hands-on, experiential learning--a critical foundation to science careers. Our students connect with visiting scholars and faculty who are experts in fields such as behavioral ecology, ecological genetics, aquatic ecology, agroecology, biogeochemistry and terrestrial ecosystems. Our courses are open to MSU students as well as those from other colleges and universities. Paid opportunities like our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and Undergraduate Research Apprenticeships (URA) programs allow undergraduate students in residence to earn money while gaining practical, hands-on research experience under the guidance of mentors. We offer paid, full- and part-time professional internships in career fields including pasture dairy management, landscape management, avian care, education, marketing and communications. These experiences assist motivated students in transitioning from the classroom to the working world and provide valuable contacts and experience. KBS will also work with students seeking more tailored opportunities to structure volunteer work as an unpaid internship for academic credit. A number of scholarships are available to undergraduates to help defray the costs of taking courses or studying in residence at KBS. We welcome visits to our campus and inquiries about studying, living and interning at KBS. For more information, please explore our website or contact our community relations office at communityrelations@kbs.msu.edu or 269-671-2015. Summer Courses
KBS offers field-based summer courses in Plant Biology (PLB), Zoology (ZOO), Geology (GLG), Entomology (ENT), Fisheries & Wildlife (FW), Forestry (FOR), Sociology (SOC), Crop & Soil Sciences (CSS), and Enhancing Linkages between Mathematics and Ecology (ELME). Students are strongly encouraged to study in residence; housing and scholarships are available. For a course schedule and more information, click here.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
KBS faculty receive grants from BEACON, GLBRC, and the NSF to involve undergraduates in their research. These positions give students a chance to conduct full-time research under the supervision of faculty. This summer program is 10 weeks long.
All REU positions offer a paid stipend ($4,500), free room and board, partial transportation costs, and research funds. We invite applications from highly motivated individuals and encourage applications from underrepresented groups in the sciences. You must be a U.S. citizen with undergraduate status to participate in the REU program. Application deadline is February 1st, 2013. For more details, click here.
Undergraduate Research Apprenticeships (URA)
The KBS URA Program features research internships that are part-time (~20 hrs/week). This allows students to take a course during the summer and receive hands-on research experience. Michigan State University students and students from BEACON schools and HBC's receive priority to participate in this program. The URA program is 5-10 weeks long, depending on courses taken and the research project. The earliest start date is May 7th; the latest end date is August 3rd. Application deadline is March 1st, 2013. For more details click here.

Volunteer Opportunities
The KBS Volunteer Program supports the KBS mission by helping to share our scientific expertise with the public through tours, activities and community events. We can offer undergraduate students - even those only with us for a summer!- a chance to learn something new, to make friends and career contacts, to improve their resumes with volunteer work and to do something positive for the community! We will also work with students seeking more tailored opportunities to structure volunteer work as an unpaid internship for academic credit.
