13 Decoy Carving Demonstration

Award-winnig carver Willy McDonald will be demonstrating the decoy carving process from start to finish. McDonald will also discuss what makes a good, funtional decoy and also talk about the Michigan Traditional Arts Program. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about and sign up for a carving workshop that will be taught by McDonald at the Sanctuary in Feburary 2009.
17 Fall Bird Walk

Come spend some time outdoors enjoying the fall colors and bird watching. Bird walks will explore various habitats of the Sanctuary, station grounds, and Kellogg Forest. Walks will be lead by Sanctuary staff and volunteers. All are welcome. Be sure to bring your binoculars; a few pair are available for loan from the Sanctuary.

4 Fall Bird Walk

5 Share the Harvest
1 to 5pm
Fee: Free admission with non-perishable food donation
On this day, you can visit the Kellogg Bird Sanctaury for free. Come and to test your bird ID skills, see a duck banding demonstration, get your face painted, and snack on cider and donuts.
Continue the fun day by taking a tour of the Manor House, visiting the Dairy Center to learn about how cows are milked, watching farm equipment in action and taking a wagon ride to pick out a pumpkin, and visiting the Kellogg Forest to learn about trees and make a pinecone bird feeder.

8 All About Turkeys

November is a month when many are thinking about turkeys, some of us are hunting them and many of us are eating them. Ever wondered about this strange but interesting bird? During this family program, you will find out about the interesting lives of these birds and also make a turkey call to take home with you.

18 How Birds Cope with Winter
7pm, appropriate for ages 13 years and older

About 90% of the birds that breed in Michigan migrate to warmer climates in the winter. When the weather gets colder, most of us have it easy. We can put on an extra blanket or sit next to a warm fire. What about birds? What do they do when the snow starts to fly to stay warm and find food that they need to survive? Come and learn about the strategies that birds use to cope with the colder months and some things that you can do to help them.

13 Winter Birds and Holiday Treats

It's the holiday season and the time to give to those in need. One group you can help is the birds who are visiting your yard during the cold winter months. During this family program. we will help you identify the different birds visiting your yard during the winter. We will also spend time making some holiday treats for you to take home and give to the birds in your yard.
